I SAID YES TO THE DRESS WITH BHLDN + 7 TIPS FOR WHEN WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING

It’s hard to believe that I said “yes” to the dress exactly one month ago! Everyone is right when they say time flies when planning a wedding! Nick and I are at the EIGHT month countdown until our wedding day and I can hardly believe it. I feel like I have so much to do... (SEND HELP!!)

Today I wanted to share my process of saying yes to the dress along with a few tips for wedding dress shopping for all the brides-to-be. Wedding planning can be stressful and it’s really easy to get overwhelmed when choosing a dress, so I wanted to share my tips and tricks I learned that day with you all!
You can see all of my Wedding Wednesday posts here :)

it was all a dream
This trip could not have been more perfect. I flew down from Austin, Texas for the week and stayed with my mom and close friends. It was my first time back in Chicago since I moved and it was bitter sweet! I had all these emotions and things just all started to get super real. I decided early on that it would only be my mom and I at my bridal appointment. I would like my dress to be a surprise to everyone. I had made 3 bridal appointments and well we ended up canceling on the other 2 because well “I SAID YES!”

7 TIPS FOR WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING
Let’s be honest for a second, wedding planning can be extremely stressful! Between budgets, choosing the right vendors, and figuring out all the pieces to the “wedding day” puzzle, it’s easy to turn exciting moments into stressful ones. Today I want to share my tips for wedding dress shopping in hopes that your dress shopping is smooth sailing!

GATHER INSPIRATION

I created a secret Pinterest board to gather wedding dress inspiration. It’s funny because I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted, but after looking at everything I pinned I definitely had a certain “look” I was drawn to. Which is why when I made and appointment at BHLDN a lot of my friends were shocked! Jessica we can't see you as a boho bride. When I went on their website I kept being drawn to the same designer and her dresses! I knew I had to look their first :) So glad I did too!

KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Just like anything else, having a budget is key when shopping for a wedding dress. You don’t want to have champagne taste on a beer budget and end up disappointed! Let your consultant know ahead of time what your max budget is so everyone is aware. Also, do not try on anything beyond your budget… it would be WAY too tempting if you fell in love with it! The one thing I absolutely LOVE about BHLDN is that their dresses are priced as a wedding dress should be priced! No sticker shock for us because we were well within budget :)
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

Once you have narrowed down the places you want to dress shop, call and make an appointment. Some places don’t require (or allow) appointments, but it’s way less stressful if you have an appointment. Securing an appointment will give you dedicated time with a consultant and will make your experience MUCH better. When you make and appointment with BHLDN you get to write down your favorite 8 styles to try on. That really allowed me to try on my favorites as well as a few my mother loved. I ended up falling in LOVE at the first appointment so calling the other salons was really awkward for me.

BRING APPROPRIATE SHOES & UNDERGARMENTS

It’s important to bring a pair of heels when trying on dresses so you can get a good idea of the length. It's okay if you don't have the exact shoes, the heel height is what you are looking for.  It’s also important to bring appropriate undergarments (i.e. a strapless bra and underwear) so you can get a better idea of how the dress will look and fit. Your consultant may also be in the room with you at times, so make sure you are comfortable in your undergarments! I didn't bring a strapless bra because I don't plan on wearing on my wedding day so I made sure to let my stylist know that!

BE OPEN TO TRYING ON DIFFERENT STYLES

My mom and the stylist kept telling me to keep an open mind when trying on dresses.  The one you didn’t expect to love can easily become “the” dress! I can say with 10000% certainty that is true! I had a fairly good idea of the style and aesthetic I wanted to wear on my wedding day. However; to my surprise that style did not look good on me at all. I was very disappointed so we went a totally different route. I'm so glad I listened to her and dressed my body not my taste. I continued trying on different styles and the fifth dress I tried on was the one! So, you never know! Sometimes consultants have a better idea of what you want than even you do! It's important to remember they do this for a living and have seen hundreds of bodies, they truly know what dress is RIGHT for you!

THINK ABOUT YOUR VENUE WHEN PICKING THE DRESS

Try to think of the feel of your venue when choosing your dress. Our venue is very modern and city like so my dress reflects that for sure! If your venue is very fancy, you don’t want to go with something super casual. As soon as I tried on “the” dress, I knew it was perfect not only for me, but for the venue as well! I could envision myself dancing the night away.

WHEN YOU SAY YES TO THE DRESS…. STOP LOOKING

Some people say take your time saying yes to the dress, but that is not always the case. I can honestly say that when you know "YOU WILL KNOW"  You want to be 100% sure this is the right dress for you, so whether thats your first or your hundredth just STOP! Once you have said yes, pop the champagne to celebrate! Don’t go dress shopping, stop pinning new dresses, and don’t even think about saying “yes” again. Seriously! Wedding planning is stressful enough without throwing another dress into the mix.

| HAVE FUN WITH IT |

This is the dress you are going to say “I do” and become a Mrs. in!!! Have fun with this memorable moment and share the excitement with those around you! You will have been planning and planning for months with almost nothing to show for it, until the big day that is! Trying on dresses for me was the first thing that made it all feel very “real!” I teared when I said yes and my mom sobbed. It was a moment we will truly never forget!

So tell me future brides do you have any tips or tricks before you say yes to the dress!
